![]() The result is our humble attempt at curating the best of a decade that was bursting with new ideas, fresh energy, and too many damn fine films than any top 100 list could hope to contain. We asked for the movies that had them at “hello,” the esoteric picks they’ve never forgotten, the Hollywood monoliths, the international gems, the documentaries that captured time in a bottle, and the kind of blockbusters they just don’t make anymore. #HAND OF FATE EVANGELION FULL#To best capture the full breadth, depth, and general radical-ness of ’90s cinema (“radical” in both the political and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles senses of the word), IndieWire polled its staff and most frequent contributors for their favorite films of the decade. Many of these greats are still working today, and the movies are all the better for that. Directors like Claire Denis, Spike Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Jane Campion, Pedro Almodóvar, and Quentin Tarantino became superstars for reinventing cinema on their own terms, while previously established giants like Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch dared to reinvent themselves while the entire world was watching. More than anything, what defined the decade was not just the invariable emergence of unique individual filmmakers, but also the arrival of artists who opened new doors to the endless possibilities of cinematic storytelling. On the international scene, the Iranian New Wave sparked a class of self-reflexive filmmakers who saw new layers of meaning in what movies could be, Hong Kong cinema was climaxing as the clock on British rule ticked down, a trio of major directors forever redefined Taiwan’s place in the film world, while a rascally duo of Danish auteurs began to impose a new Dogme about how things should be done. Meanwhile, the industry establishment responded to the sudden influx of new talent by entrusting its biggest tentpoles to the idiosyncratic likes of Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Verhoeven, John Woo, the Wachowskis, and Brian De Palma, resulting in franchises that felt more invented than recycled, even when they were exactly that. ![]() Young and exciting directors, many of whom are now major auteurs and perennial IndieWire favorites, were given the resources to make multiple films - some of them on massive scales. The ’90s began with a revolt against the kind of bland Hollywood product that people might kill to see in theaters today, creaking open a small window of time in which a more commercially viable American independent cinema began seeping into mainstream fare. Nowhere is that phenomenon more obvious or explicable than it is at the movies. ![]() While the ‘90s may still be linked with a wide variety of dubious holdovers - including curious slang, questionable fashion choices, and sinister political agendas - many of the decade’s cultural contributions have cast an outsized shadow on the first stretch of the 21st century. ![]()

![]() ![]() In the morning, the girl complains of a sleepless night, having been kept awake by some terrible nuisance in her mattresses. They put the girl to bed atop a mountain of mattresses and feather beds under the bottom-most of which the prince's mother places a single pea. How does the prince verify her claim? Well, thankfully, his mother, queen of the jerks, has an idea. All the girls that he tests out are either too fat or too thin, have poor table manners or shoddy ways of speech and dress, so he discards them like ill-fitting shoes.įinally, a manic pixie dream girl magically appears on his doorstep, drenched in rain and claiming to be a princess. It turns out he's a bit of a choosy jerk, and he wants his bride to be a jerk like him. In the tale of the princess and the pea, a young prince has a whale of a time trying to get married. Physically, it’s well-built with quality stitching and elegant-looking leather. ![]() Users seem highly satisfied with its ability to hold cards and bills securely without making them too tight to easily retrieve. Of the new ones, we found the Amelleon Men’s to offer the best value. While most tend to agree it’s well-made and durable, some reports suggest that it can become a bit bulky once it’s loaded with cards and cash, so if slimness is your number one priority, you may want to consider another option.Īll three of the other new additions - the NapaWalli Front Pocket, Travelambo Slim and Amelleon Men’s - are constructed with technology for blocking radio-frequency identification, which can be used as a form of digital theft in which credit cards can be read and duplicated. ![]() We did find the Deacon, a bifold model from House of Jack that serves as an adequate replacement for the Skull. We also removed the Kinzd Front Pocket, noting multiple reports that its strong magnet frequently demagnetizes the strip on credit cards and transit cards, rendering them unusable. We discovered availability issues with the House of Jack Skull, Adamant Black and XBand Thin, so we withdrew those three items from the list. ![]() ![]() Best audacity for mac software#Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose. ![]() ![]() ![]() All of these professors are such champions for their students in whatever careers we ended up in. Kathleen Chamberlain (English & Lit) who instilled in me a love of reading, a firm foundation in women’s studies, and the tools to better understand intersectionality. Kelly Bremner who served as my advisor and who later encouraged me to chase this calling to serve the church. Biliana Stoytcheva-Horissian (Acting), Dr. I am so thankful for the professors who taught me at Emory & Henry: Dr. I remember introducing my hospital chaplain cohort (called an Interpersonal Relationship Group) to the play “Wit” by Margaret Edson and being profoundly moved re-reading that beloved play in a clinical setting. My hope is that I was able to teach the people I met along the way a little something about art, faith, and theatre. I carried with me to each place the skills I learned in both college and seminary. ![]() I spent one summer as a college chaplain at Montreat Conference Center before moving to Chattanooga to serve as the Director of Children’s Ministry at Rivermont Presbyterian Church for two years before being called as Associate Pastor (first ordained call) to Rumple just a few short months ago. During my time at Union I served as an intern at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, REX Hospital in Raleigh, and First Presbyterian Church in Annapolis, M.D. I am thankful for those internship experiences where I was able to learn those necessary skills in order to make a smooth and seamless transition.Īfter leaving Florida Studio Theatre, I spent one year in Miami working with the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program before attending Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond. There will be deadlines to meet, emails to send, and connections to be made. It was not as easy a transition out of the classroom and into the field as I would have thought. They taught me to ask direct guiding questions in order to better acclimate myself to an office culture. All three taught me about embracing a non-traditional (9-5) work schedule. When I graduated I interned then was on full-time staff as Company Manager at Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota, F.L. I interned for a semester at Barter Theatre in Directing my senior year. I served as an intern at North Carolina Stage Company in Asheville, N.C. When I read the Bible I ask some of those same questions I ask when reading a play–who is this person in front of me? What is their motivation? And, what does the text say about them either here or in other stories? Then apply it to ministry–what is this text saying about God, world, and self? This calling has carried me far across the east coast serving different communities I never dreamed I would spend time in. I especially think of the importance of these tools for theology in the public square speaking out against injustice and preaching boldly about loving kindness. It taught me to organize my thoughts speaking loudly and clearly. It taught me to be a better coach to people in the art of liturgy and public scripture reading. I am thankful for the tools I learned during my time at Emory that prepared me for seminary and for ministry. So from facing grief to joyful celebration, from understanding the importance of ritual, from learning to articulate clearly, to singing in groups (or virtual choir), to coordinating the nativity service, it is all woven together by foundational classes I took at Emory & Henry in theatre. Reading, researching, and understanding scripts help us to better understand the depth and range of the human experience. My theatre department experience has been a rock and a guide in my call to ministry and in my current role. He currently serves as Associate Pastor at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, N.C. Reverend Russ Kerr, from Davidson, N.C., graduated from Emory & Henry in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. ![]() |
